Clinical trials are an essential part of developing and validating new oncology therapies. They can bring incredible opportunities for survival to patients who are not responding to traditional treatment. Unfortunately, most trials today are limited to a few select hospitals. They’re rarely found at your hometown’s new but small, state-of-the-art regional cancer center or community medical centers that serve low to middle income neighborhoods. In fact, in the facilities around the country where 80% of the US population gets their healthcare, there is a slim 3% enrollment rate in trials.
Furthermore, certain groups—such as elderly patients, underserved minorities, or those living in rural areas—often don’t have access to trials they are eligible for due to transportation or geographic barriers. So how can we help solve trial diversity and inclusion challenges? The AACR’s 2022 Cancer Disparity Progress Report notes, “Achieving cancer health equity through access to care must include equitable access to participation in clinical research opportunities.” We must start by solving the access problem and bringing the trials where the people are – creating a more patient-centric workflow...
